In order to qualify as an instructor, it is necessary to attend the DSA Training and Development Centre, Cardington, Bedfordshire. The assessment is in two parts. Completion of the second stage will license you to take students through the complete DAS syllabus

It is important that the following course criteria are met before commencing:

• Hold a valid full motorcycle licence for a minimum of 3 years from date of test
• Meet the DSA’s fit and proper person criteria and as such, give details of any motoring or non-motoring offences acquired within the last 4 years.

Part 1: The CBT Instructor Assessment Course

Our 6-day course fully prepares you for the two-day examination of both your instructional and supervisory skills at Cardington. Remember, you are being assessed on your suitability to not only run your own training school but also ‘down train’ other instructors within in. Our tutorials comprehensively cover the following subjects which you will be assessed on:

• CBT Introduction 
• Machine Introduction
• Practical on-site training
• Practical on-site riding
• Practical on-road riding

At the end of our course, you will have learnt a wide range of new subjects and how to properly deliver it to your ‘would-be’ students. You will also benefit from improved communication and teaching skills that will undoubtedly help you in any walk of life.

Part 2: The DAS Instructor Assessment Course

Please note, this course is FREE to returning RAKtrain post-CBT1 Cardington passes 

This may only be undertaken once you have successfully passed the Cardington CBT. Our DAS course fully prepares you for the ‘new rider on a larger capacity machine’ scenario the DSA like to use. We will show you how to adapt your instructional techniques to cope with this situation. The DSA assessment takes just half a day to complete but has some unique features, which you must prepare for.

Our tutorials and practicals comprehensively cover the following subjects which you will be assessed on:

• Theory session: in which you will familiarise the new ‘big bike’ rider with their machine
• Onsite handling pre-set tests: where you will help the rider overcome several problems they may be having adapting to the new bike
• On-road pre-set tests: your assessment will consist of three on–road lessons chosen from a list of 12 road scenarios

You will also be welcome to join our instructors on an actual DAS course we may be holding to get a feel for what it takes to train a student for their exam. ‘Shadowing’ an instructor will give you invaluable experience and ‘polish’ before you go to Cardington for your own assessment. A side benefit of completing our course will be the raising of your own bike riding standards as well as your communication and teaching skills.
